Transportation in Bangkok

Subway

There are two systems used in Bangkok the MRT and BST. Fares are based on routes and how long the route is. You can buy a card to put money on. However, the card cost about $2 and you have to put at least $14 on it. The most expensive ride cost around $1.40, unless you are staying in Bangkok for at least two weeks I would not recommend that method.

Another method, if you have a Visa card you can just tap the monitor to enter and exit and it will charge you with no extra cost. This was an excellent way to get around without having to guess how much you might need on your card.  As another choice you can purchase one time tickets as well at the kiosk. Make sure to have cash on hand.

Ridesharing Apps

Grab and Bolt are the most used ridesharing apps in Thailand. You can find a driver in just about any major city and they are a great way to get around quickly and for a decent price. Taxi prices are almost double of what you can find on Grab or Bolt.

All you have to do is download the app and set up an account. It works like other ridesharing apps, you type in the address of where you want to go and it will notify you what type of vehicles that are available and the cost. Once you accept, the driver will head your way and pick you up. Once you are at your destination you will pay the driver cash.

In Thailand, you have the option to choose a motorcycle as your vehicle of choice, which is usually the cheapest option. Just be aware they usually will not have an extra helmet for you to wear.

Bus

The buses in Bangkok are another great way to get around. We used the bus system several times and the schedule is not as set as the the subway system. We would have to wait an extra 10-15 minutes for the bus to finally arrive. If you are on a time crunch I would not recommend this method, but if you have a relaxed schedule riding a bus in Bangkok is a very fun experience.

You do not need a ticket prior to getting on the bus. Just hop on and take your seat. There will be a lady on the bus wearing a uniform walking around collecting the fares. It cost us depending on the bus and route anywhere from $0.20 – $0.50.

Trying to navigate a new city in a foreign country can become very tiring, but also so rewarding as you grow in your confidence and skills. I hope this helps you as you plan your trip to Thailand and remember to have a great time!
